What is cranial osteopathy?

Cranial osteopathy is a variant of traditional osteopathy. It is not limited to the head (or cranium) as the name suggests. Cranial osteopathy covers the entire body, but with a more pronounced focus on the head, neck, and spine.

Osteopaths seek to restore or maintain the health and wellbeing of an individual by using osteopathic treatments and techniques that make sure the bones, muscles, connective tissues, and ligaments function smoothly together.

How does cranial osteopathy work?

A part of what makes cranial osteopathy so popular is that it has a particular emphasis on structures within the skull. The skull consists of twenty-two bones. These bones can deform ever so slightly as the body experiences what is known as “involuntary motion”. This motion is entirely normal and rhythmical, but can disrupt the fluidity that connects the body together.

Sometimes these bone deformities can result in stress accumulating in the body. Cranial osteopaths are trained to detect these rhythmical changes in the surrounding tissue, which can then be used to gauge whether a person is healthy, or where there is a point of stress-induced tension.

Involuntary motion is not the only means for stress to build up. As the body encounters physical and emotional issues throughout its life, stress can accumulate and manifest as a defensive “tightening” up of the muscle tissue. These physical issues can come from trauma, such as a fall or sporting injury. Over time they can develop into symptoms treatable with cranial osteopathy. These can include:

  • Headaches
  • Aches and pains all over the body (from misalignment in the bone structure)

Is cranial osteopathy the right treatment for me?

Cranial osteopathy is very relaxing and suitable for all ages. Its peaceful practice, gentle massage-like touch and (often sleep-inducing) techniques make it especially popular with children and babies. For example, it is very commonly used to treat colic and sleeping problems in infants.

But cranial osteopathy remains popular for adults as well. It is particularly effective at limiting or even preventing chronic or developing conditions such as:

  • Migraines
  • Arthritis
  • Depression

Our practitioners are able to use sensitive touch to detect problematic areas within the body that cause pain. The aim is to support the re-balancing of points of tension and restore a person to good health and wellness.
